Prior to 1970, planners in Virginia were organized as a section of the American Institute of Planner’s (AIP) National Capital Chapter, which also included Washington, D.C. and Maryland. In 1970, a statewide AIP Chapter was formed for Virginia. APA was established in 1978 with the merger of AIP and the American Society of Planning Officials (ASPO).
