Consider July 25-27 for a trip to Wintergreen for VAPA’s annual conference. While this event is traditionally held in the spring, VAPA elected an alternative schedule to avoid creating a conflict for those who wanted to attend the April national APA conference in Philadelphia. (Note: the 2008 conference will be held in the Spring so advance planning will be advisable).

This year’s focus for the VAPAannual meeting is on tourism in the Commonwealth, highlighting Virginia’s rich natural and cultural heritage. As always, however, the annual conference is our opportunity to share successes and lessons learned in a variety of planning specialties, and we are pleased to have such a broad range of sessions proposed this year, resulting in an excellent program. Sessions are generally organized into three tracks:

  • Opening Day: Wednesday July 25
    • To provide an opportunity to discuss and digest the variety of land use planning issues addressed and avoided at this year’s General Assembly, the conference will open on Wednesday with a panel discussion on the variety of transportation and eminent domain proposals that were considered in 2007. The efforts of VAPA’s Legislative Committee, with the support of Eldon James and Sue Rowland, during the session, to educate members of the General Assembly on land use matters has given us the chance to both inform and be better informed about state enabling authorities, which shape the face of planning in Virginia. We are pleased to be able to offer insiders’ view of the dynamics and significant legislation of the 2007 General Assembly. As is our tradition, a Welcome Reception will be held Wednesday evening to allow attendees to reconnect with colleagues and enjoy the beauty of Virginia’s mountains.
  • Thursday, July 26
    • In addition to a full program, VAPA will present the 2007 Planning Awards on Thursday. Nominated by their colleagues and evaluated by a jury of their peers, this year’s exemplary planners will be honored for their hard work, creativity and leadership in the field. Areception will follow the awards.
  • Friday, July 27: Enjoy Wintergreen
    • We will wrap up on Friday with a half day program that allows everyone to take in the scenery, and enjoy lunch with friends at one of Wintergreen’s several restaurants.
    • Golf Anyone? When the conference ends on Friday, join a foursome for an outing on Devil's Knob! VAPA Outing Tee Times Starting at 2:30 p.m. (open to VAPA conference attendees, spouses or other conference guests) Information Here.
